[He's pleased both by the teacher/pupil comment, and to flying higher! He's so excited, making grabby hands towards the cloud, as if he could carry it home with him.]
[He marvels at the ghostly feel of the cloud around him, fascinated by how it disperses as they fly around, the wings blowing the fog about. His eyes are bright, delighted by her answer.]
A birdie! I saw a bird when I was with Auntie April! I can be a bird!?
[Ohhhh, he wants to be a bird! He wants to be a bird so bad! He wants to fly! This is so cool!]
[...And then, suddenly, he is a bird. Oh. Oh, that's unexpected, huh. He slips right out of her hands, suddenly too small to be held, and peeps in surprise. The illusion carries on through to his familiar form, turning him into a puffy-feathered, stubby-winged baby bunting.
Better catch your extra tiny son! He's about to plummet.]
[Her initial gut reaction to her arms suddenly feeling empty is panic! But that peep - her eyes hone in on the precious bird, and she quickly but gently snatches him out of the air.]
B-baby bird! You're a beautiful baby bird!! [Now she flaps in place within the air while holding the baby bird boy up to her face.]
That's marvelous, but also don't do that so suddenly!! You could have fallen! You are not ready to fly yet! Understand?!
[He chirps a few more times, too shocked to speak properly, but resting safely in his mother's hands helps him settle enough to try. He'd be flailing his little baby wings if he wasn't currently held between her fingers.]
I'm a bird?! [peep!] I'm a bird! [peep peep!] I didn't know! I didn't [peep!] know I could!
[It's hard to remain stern in the face of of such cuteness! As evident from the wide grin now decorating her face.
She didn't realize he'd retain his Familiar properties at this age, but this has sure been one way to find out! She keeps holding him carefully in her hand, now more careful with her movements now that her son is literally a baby bird in her hand.]
You're magical now! Congratulations! Just- be careful with that power. You had me scared senseless for a moment!
[He can't really do much right now - no proper arms or hands for hugging - so he bonks his head against her fingers. The softest of loving baby headbutts.]
[That little headbutt is enough to warm her heart!!]
It's okay! It's okay, my little baby bird. Just remember to be careful. But for now, your mother is here as your incredible guardian angel! [She adjusts her grip so she's holding onto the lower part of her body, as she starts moving more.]
Now how about this! Spread out your wings, and it'll be like you're flying with me!
[How does he move his wings... it's just like arms, right? He wiggles a bit, lifting them up and out, allowing those tiny muscles to spread. It takes a moment, but he gets there at last, and releases a gasp.]
I feel it! Wind! I'm so fluttery!
[He feels almost weightless, lifted by the gusts of air flowing over and under his feathers.]
[She wonders, is this why parents put toy steering wheels in the passenger seats of the cars? Because it's just so cute watching him flap his little wings while they soar through the air. Casey lets out a laugh.]
Yes, you are so fluttery! You are the most fluttery of little birds! And the most precious! Feel the wind, my little copilot! And keep on flapping. We are about to soar even further...!
I'm flapping! Watch me! I'm doing it just like you!
[He'll keep on flailing those stubby little wings like his mom says. She's teaching him how to fly, how cool is this!? It sure isn't doing much on his end, but he's having the time of his life.]
[He goes right back to that happy, childish screaming as she dips and weaves in all direction. She's giving him the best gift she possibly could (her presence, of course, but also this very rad flight).]
Hurry up and grow, wings! I wanna fly more and more!
[She sheds a tear. Him talking about protecting her, it's hard not to think about what she just learned about her own fate. That she died on this incredible child. Her heart breaks when she imagines what it must be like for him - but now, things are different. They're soaring through the sky together, and they can take care of each other.]
You'll get there. You'll see. I know you'll be able to protect me like no other. You will save my life when you're big! [She understands that now, even if it was an indirect result of changing the future.]
[That admission is enough to coax him into instinctively wanting to be big again, so after a moment he poofs back to his human self, glad to have arms once more so he can hug her.]
I always wanted to help you! I wanted to save you! I can do it, you promise?
[Knowing she vanished so far from everyone, away from him, and that even if he'd been there, he couldn't have done anything- it wrankled even his young mind for so long. He hated being small and helpless. He wanted to grow and fight the things that killed his family. He wanted to save them!]
[Oh, he's a real boy again!! At least if he hugs her immediately, it will make it a little easier to make sure she doesn't drop him again. Now she just adjusts her grip to keep one arm around him while continuing to ascend.]
Of course you can! You're a hero who can and will save the whole world! One day, you'll stop a whole bunch of bad things from happening to me and everyone else you care about!
[If Mom says it's true, then it MUST be. But it sounds so big. How could he possibly do it? He'd be happy if he could just save her, and the rest of their family. World-saving is something sensei would do.]
[He giggles at the cheek pinch, and obliges in holding on as tightly as he can with his childish grip. His hands are small but it's quite firm, no shortage of strength in this kid. (Give him ten years and he'll swing a helicopter)]
Does the sky have a roof?
[Just how high does Thirteen's dimension go? They should probably not find out.]
No... or at least, I don't think so! [She wouldn't be surprised if this world had such weird physics going, but she also hasn't gone high enough to find out. She's just reaching the limit of how far she knows she can safely soar, and she knows she's not going to risk going higher while she has her child with her.]
...Um, but if we go to high, we'll get sucked up into outer space and get suck floating around. We won't be able to practice combat training up there! [As if that's the most tragic part.]
Anyway, get ready! Because here... we... go...!
[With that, she starts soaring downwards! Though it's probably more like a controlled fall, while holding Casey tightly. It's roller coaster time!!]

I want wings! Can I have wings too?
no subject
[She goes right up above the cloud, close enough that he could skim his hand through it as they fly!]
Well, yes, one day you can have wings of your own. Not just that, you'll be able to become the most precious little birdie!

Patience! One day they'll grow real strong and carry you far. Just keep practicing and spread those adorable wings!
